Overview
Afterpay is a "buy now, pay later" (BNPL) service that offers customers the flexibility to pay for their services in four interest-free installments over six weeks. This guide outlines the system requirements for offering Afterpay and details the payment process for the customer.
When a customer pays with Afterpay, Zerorez receives the full invoice amount upfront. Afterpay then manages the collection of installments directly from the customer.
System Requirements & Availability
It is critical to understand where and how Afterpay can be offered. Please note the following requirements:
- Square Integration Required: Afterpay is exclusively available for locations that use Square for payment processing.
- Customer Invoice Link Only: The option to pay with Afterpay is only available to customers through the secure user invoice link.
- Not Available for Staff Processing: Afterpay cannot be used as a payment method by technicians in the field on their mobile devices or by Customer Service Representatives (CSRs) within the desktop application.
The Customer Payment Process
Here is the typical step-by-step payment flow for a customer using Afterpay through their invoice link:
- Select Payment Method: After the customer selects Credit/Debit card as a payment method, while they are on the secure invoice payment page, the customer selects Afterpay as their payment option.
- Redirect for Approval: The customer is redirected to the Afterpay website. Here, they will either log into their existing Afterpay account or create a new one.
- Instant Approval: Afterpay provides an instant approval decision.
- Review Payment Schedule: Once approved, the customer is presented with a clear breakdown of their payment schedule—four equal, interest-free installments. The first installment is due at the time of purchase.
- Complete the Purchase: The customer confirms the payment schedule to finalize the transaction. The purchase is now complete, and the Zerorez invoice is marked as paid in full.
- Subsequent Payments: Afterpay automatically charges the customer's linked debit or credit card for the three remaining installments every two weeks. Afterpay also sends payment reminders to the customer before each due date.
